Families struggling with the cost of living and rising prices were gifted "Iftar packs" by a team of volunteers in Blackburn.

Members of the TROS (The Rock of Society) a non-profit group set up outside the Al Rija Cafe on Lower Audley Street.

Their initiative, "Iftar for All", was aimed at people within the community who may be struggling due to the cost-of-living crisis or anyone else who may need assistance.

Iftar is the time of day when Muslims break their fast after a day of fasting.

The month of Ramadan will end this week and will be followed by the festival of Eid.

Project supervisor Danyaal Mahmood said: “We at TROS decided to help those who are struggling the most by provided iftar packs.

"The Iftar packs were free of charge and were available to anyone.

“The pack's consisted of freshly made cheese and tomato pasta prepared and donated by our volunteer Mrs Ali from Mummy's Kitchen, bottled water, soft drinks, biscuits and crisps were also donated by other local businesses and individuals.

“We also handed them out to people who drove by, to the salvation army and Islington house.”

Harun Ali from the group said: “It was nice to meet so many people from various backgrounds. It gave us the opportunity to learn how the cost of living crisis has affected people in different ways.

“We at TROS do our best to support people and have been running our ‘Help the Homeless’ project fortnightly. It is difficult for us as we rely on public donations to carry out our work.

“We are grateful that we have the support from the people of Blackburn and local businesses who through these tough economic times support us by donating towards our projects.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the local businesses and individuals who have contributed towards this initiative.

“If anyone wishes to donate then please do visit our website or Instagram page.”

TROS was founded in 2011 by a team of volunteers and aims to assist people of all backgrounds and communities.

In the past the group has handed out warm food and items such as clothing, woolly hats, scarves, gloves socks during the winter to the most vulnerable in society.
