Headteacher fasts for a day as school hosts Ramadan gathering

A headteacher was among those who fasted as a Blackburn secondary school hosted their annual Iftar during Ramadan.

Queen Elizabeth Brammer School (QEG’s) holds an evening meal each year for pupils and parents. Food is donated by parents and staff who all bring dishes to be shared with attendees.
During the month of Ramadan Muslims fast from sunrise and break their fast at Iftar time – at sunset.

QEG’s is one of the oldest schools in the region dating back over 500 years.

The event saw a special nasheed performed by Zaheer Iqbal and was organised by Zah Bhatti.

Headteacher Claire Gammon said: “It is an absolutely wonderful event. It is one of favourite events of the year with the whole community coming together.

“It is wonderful for our younger Year 7s who have never experienced an event like this.
“I spent the day fasting and creating cakes to share tonight and that is something really really special. It shows the love and peace between our communities.”

Blackburn Royal Hospital Imam Fazal Hassan led a presentation about Ramadan.

He told the audience: “Initiatives like this develop friendships and build love and harmony through sharing the blessing of Ramadan.

“Breaking bread together means breaking barriers.

“Events like these honestly helps to remove fear. When you remove fear you remove hate. When you remove hate you develop love.”
