British Rail engineer Stewart Duncan inspects the work which was well underway to repair the Holme Tunnel in 1986.

The tunnel, which carried the online from Burnley to Hebden Bridge had been in danger of collapsing due to the weight of the hillside above.

Steel ‘ribs’ which you can clearly see in this photograph had been inserted to strengthen the tunnel and they had been connected to gauges which would measure any future movement.

The tunnel was built in 1849 but by 1986 the 243-metre long stretch had begun to distort. In total 96 steel arches were inserted and six years later the tunnel was closed once again while a further 60 steel arches were added.
