AN East Lancashire MP has backed a campaign to increase awareness of brain tumours and speed of diagnosis of the life-threatening condition.
Ribble Valley Tory Nigel Evans attended a Parliamentary event held by the Brain Tumour Charity, the world’s leading charity in its field.
It is the largest dedicated funder of research into the condition globally.
Its aim is to double the survival rates and halve the harm that brain tumours have on an individual’s quality of life.
Brain tumours are currently the biggest cancer killer in children and the under 40s and just 12 per cent of adults survive five years after a brain cancer diagnosis.
With over 12,000 people diagnosed with a brain tumour in the UK, the charity is working to improve the speed of diagnosis.
In July 2022 it launched a campaign ‘Better Safe than Tumour’, aiming to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of a brain tumour.
House of Commons deputy speaker Mr Evans said: “I welcome the work being done by The Brain Tumour Charity to raise awareness of the symptoms of a brain tumour.
"As brain tumours remain the biggest cancer killer in young people, ensuring everyone is aware of the early symptoms is vital to ensuring faster diagnosis.
“The Brain Tumour Charity’s latest campaign to raise awareness of the signs of a brain tumour will undoubtedly help to save lives through faster diagnosis, and I strongly encourage anyone with symptoms that are unusual, persistent, or unexplained to go and see their GP.”
