The chimneys belonging to the world-famous Nori brickworks loom large over the football pitch behind Whalley Road, Altham.

There is still debate over the red bricks which made Accrington famous and which were used in the foundations of the Empire State building. Some same that due to their toughness the bricks were compared to iron and Nori was simply a way of saying iron backwards.

Others insist that it was an error which led to iron being spelled backwards when the bricks were made.

Accrington Stanley’s Wham Stadium now takes up much of the site of the pitch but do you remember playing on it with a local league side?

It’s a long shot, but is anyone even able to identify the two teams pictured here probably in in the late 1970s or early 80s. The chimneys were demolished in 1981. Email bygones@nqnw.co.uk or leave a comment.
