A DRIVE to improve home security in two town centre wards has received a £2,000 boost from local councillors.

The cash has been given to Homewise to support the households of over 70s in Accrington's Peel and Barnfield areas.

It brings the total investment in the charity's 'Safe and Well' initiative to £5,100.

Homewise is dedicated to improving the homes and quality of life of older and disabled people..

People will be able to receive grants for security measures that can help to provide peace of mind and enable them to live in their own homes.

These include crime prevention checks, and 'ring doorbells' for residents over 70 who are living alone.

There are also gas fire and boiler services available, and supply of carbon monoxide detectors, whilst resources last.

The new grant comes form the Peel and Barnfield Area Committee has outstanding funds to allocate following a historic grant received from central government in recognition of deprivation issues.

It is comprised of four councillors – June Harrison, Caroline Montague, Joyce Plummer and Paddy Short.

Cllr Plummer, Hyndburn Council's resources boss said: “The committee were delighted to support this application between the four of us. Hopefully, the funding will come in very useful. You can have chains put on your door, or fit a little device on your vestibule door if you have one.”

Cllr Harrison, who sits on the Homewise Advisory Group, said: “These important home adaptations will help keep some of our most vulnerable residents safe and secure this winter, and give them one less thing to worry about as money is tight during the cost of living crisis. We were proud to approve Homewise’s application for area committee support.”
