East Lancashire police officers took part in a week-long national initiative to highlight the good work done by Neighbourhood Policing officers.
The National Police Chief Council’s neighbourhood policing week of action took place from January 23 until January 29 and involved forces working together to showcase the work of different policing teams and the benefits they have to the public.
East Division, which covers the areas of Blackburn with Darwen, Ribble Valley, Pendle, Rossendale, Hyndburn and Burnley, carried out numerous activities throughout the week to show what each day can bring in neighbourhood policing.
The activities included initiatives to tackle burglary, bike theft and anti-social behaviour; inputs on knife crime, exploitation and other issues for schools, colleges, and community groups; targeted action aimed at reducing drug and traffic offences; and public engagement events online and in local supermarkets and town centres.
PC Dave Render, who is part of the Hyndburn team, said his days differ massively and include school visits and visits to local shops and stores.
He said: “The days can differ massively, some days I start with visiting to schools, engaging with pupils, and delivering educational sessions, or I head to the local shops and stores to make sure everything is ticking along well in the communities and if not, what can I do to help.
“Other days it may be dealing with anti-social behaviour incidents, drug dealings, traffic issues, burglaries or criminal damage – although, most of the time, my day consists of doing a bit of all of that.”
In Blackburn, neighbourhood officers joined young players the Blackburn Rovers kicks programme, to play a game of football.
A spokesperson said: “Blackburn Neighbourhood team joined in with a kickabout last night at the BRIC Ewood Park and had a chat with some of the young people who play football as part of Blackburn Rovers kicks.”
Chief Inspector Rick Ogdin said “Neighbourhood policing is at the heart of what we do, our role is to make communities feel safe and to give them a voice around policing priorities and what matters to them.
“The week of action has been a great way to show the communities of East Lancashire the hard work that our Neighbourhood Policing teams do, all year round, to keep the people of safe.
“I encourage people to take our Lancashire Talking survey to tell us what it is like to live in your community."
