From baby murderers to drugs gangs, domestic abusers to dangerous drivers - a varied amount of criminals passed through the doors of the county's crown courts last month, with none of them leaving via the exit.
Here, we've brought you a round up of all the East Lancashire offenders jailed in January.
Plumber jailed for strangling partner in front of children
A plumber who strangled his girlfriend in front of her children on two separate occasions before he was PAVA-sprayed by police for resisting arrest has been jailed.
He also told one of the children their mother was a “c***”, and sent her a text message with a picture of her damaged laptop saying, “see what happens when you don’t pick up your phone”.
Thomas Haining, 34, was jailed for more than two years at Preston Crown Court on Wednesday after a jury found him guilty at a trial in November of two counts of intentional strangulation.

Son jailed after putting blade to the neck of his mother
A son put a knife to his mother's neck while struggling with his mental health, a court has heard.
Matthew Nadin, 28, had been receiving help for his mental health for some time but he was still struggling when he cut his mother's arm with a Stanley knife before putting the blade to her neck.
Lisa Worsley, prosecuting, told Burnley Crown Court that Nadin’s mother, Susan Ray, returned to her home in Cornell Grove, Burnley, on June 22 and noticed that something was ‘not right’ with her son, thinking he may have been under the influence of drugs.

Burnley dad attacked mother in street, hurting baby son
A father-of-four tipped his youngest son out of his pram while in the throes of attacking the boy’s mother.
The child, who was around eight months old, suffered bruising and swelling to his face as he landed on the pavement during the street assault.
Burnley Crown Court heard how two passers-by came to the aid of the young mum as she was walking with the pram down the street in Burnley in December.
Joss Cunningham was only five days away from a trial in which he was due to answer to previous assault charges on the same victim.

Brother of Lewis Taylor jailed for dangerous driving on bike
A friend and a brother of a man who died while riding his motorbike were pulling wheelies in the moments before his death, a court has heard.
Joel Ludlam, 30, and Joshua Carter, 29, were out riding their bikes in a group on December 23, 2020, that included Ludlam’s brother, Lewis Taylor
Denise Fitzpatrick, prosecuting at Burnley Crown Court said the group were driving dangerously around Burnley in the middle of the day, with several members of the public making reports about their driving.

Nelson twins jailed over five-year cocaine dealing operation
Twin brothers who were involved in a cocaine dealing and money laundering operation over a period of five years have been jailed.
Their co-defendant, one of the brothers’ partners, has narrowly avoided a jail sentence.
Burnley Crown Court heard how twins, Sohail and Rohail Khan, along with Sohail’s girlfriend, Jade Mendes, were involved in the supply of Class A drugs between October 2017 and September 2022.
They pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply class A drugs as well as possession of criminal property; money from the sale of drugs.

Brothers jailed after launching 18 blow attack on victim
Two brothers kicked and punched a man around 18 times to the face, body and head over a family disagreement.
Ibran and Shahzad Khan denied their involvement in the incident, which took place just off Blackburn Road in Accrington in March 2020, and took the matter to trial.
It was only when new CCTV evidence came to light, showing the brothers raining blows to their victim’s head did they change their pleas to assault occasioning actual bodily harm to guilty.

Darwen man jailed for one punch attack on drunk victim
A man was placed into an induced coma and had to have a metal plate fitted in his head after being punched once by the cousin of his drug dealer.
Sarim Ali’s single punch caused his victim, Damon Aldore, who was drunk at the time, to fall backwards and hit his head so hard it caused a bleed on the brain and left him in hospital for weeks.
Preston Crown Court heard how on July 30, 2021, Mr Aldore had been drinking with his girlfriend at her house in Darwen.

Burnley man set fire to own house in order to kill himself
A man who set fire to his own home with the intention of ending his own life has been jailed.
Lee Taylor was in the grip of heroin and cocaine addiction when he made the decision to barricade himself into the bedroom of the house he rented in Brennand Street, Burnley, on August 25, and set it on fire.
Preston Crown Court heard Taylor, 53, had been out for a walk that evening with his dog, and at around 8pm, after picking up his methadone prescription, dropped the dog off at a friend’s house.

Four jailed following investigation into £20m Bitcoin fraud
Four people, including a man from Clayton-le-Moors, have been jailed following an investigation into a £20 million Bitcoin fraud.
The fraud began in 2017 when James Parker from Blackpool discovered a glitch in an Australian cryptocurrency trading website which allowed him to steal money.
He and his co-conspirators then siphoned off more than £20m worth of credits over a three-month period.

Steven Hobson breached an order by posing as a baby photographer
A convicted paedophile has been jailed after breaching his sexual harm prevention order by posing online as a photography company and asking families if he could take pictures of their babies.
Steven Hobson, 30, also admitted failing to notify the police of his whereabouts when he moved from Sheffield to East Lancashire earlier this year, and pleaded guilty to making five indecent category B images of children and five category C images.
Hobson, originally from South Yorkshire, was jailed in 2017 for making and distributing indecent images of children after he posed online as another man, and asked a 13-year-old girl to take photos and videos of herself breastfeeding a doll.

28 men jailed after police bust £2m cannabis operation
More than 25 men have been jailed for a total of more than 70 years after police uncovered a multi-million-pound drugs operation.
In total, 30 defendants, mostly Lithuanian nationals, faced the courts charged for their involvement in the conspiracy which saw the group set up 70 cannabis farms in houses across Nelson, Accrington and Brierfield, many in terraced homes with neighbours unaware of what was going on next door.
Dubbed Operation Rockwell, officers found 2,500 cannabis plants and 100kg of dried cannabis, with an estimated street value of £2 million.

Six jailed for their involvement in 'Tiger Line' drugs gang
Six men have been jailed after police took down a heroin and crack cocaine ring called the ‘Tiger Line’.
Tens of thousands of pounds worth of drugs and cash were seized by officers who managed to take down the group operating in Burnley in 2021.
On Friday (January 20), Judge Sara Dodd sent six of the nine men involved to jail for a total of 24 years and six months.
The other three received suspended sentences.

Man jailed after wielding meat cleaver at Great Harwood café
A ‘family man’ who threatened a man with a knife and went to a café with a meat cleaver after his younger brother was ‘bullied’ has been jailed for more than five years.
Reece Ball, 20, was involved in two group attacks, the first where he was wielding a knife during a burglary and the second where he turned up with a meat cleaver and made threats to a group in a café.
Nicola Carroll, prosecuting at Preston Crown Court said on October 30, 2020, Ball, of York Close, Clayton Le Moors, was with two friends, a man and a woman, when he was spotted by Bradley Pettigrew who was looking out of a flat window in Henry Street.

Five Burnley men sentenced for more than 31 years for drug offences
Five men have been sentenced to more than 31 years in prison following a major police investigation into a major drugs gang.
Officers launched Operation Marina in February 2022, which was designed to dismantle an organised crime group which was supplying class A drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, through two ‘drug lines’ - phone numbers used to advertise drugs for sale.
From January to May 2022, officers investigated a drugs group which was headed by defendants Adeel Khan and Javed Miah, who set up and ran the “Casper” and “ACE” drugs lines to sell heroin and crack cocaine throughout East Lancashire.

Ex-boxer and teen took man to Pendle Hill and robbed him
An ex-Great Britain boxer and his accomplice robbed a man, driving him 12 miles to Pendle Hill, before demanding he 'strip off so they could take photos of him'.
Former boxer Moeen Khan, 24, and Qahher Hameed, 19, have been jailed after robbing Zoaib Mohammed of his car, phone and £60 in cash.
Prosecuting at Preston Crown Court on Monday, Mercedeh Jabbari said in the early hours of January 15, 2022, Samuel Perry was driving near Pendle Hill when he was stopped by Mr Mohammed who said he 'had just been kidnapped and his car stolen'.

Blackburn: Distraction burglar jailed after stealing from pensioners
A distraction burglar who preyed on elderly people in Blackburn has been jailed for six years.
Ajmal Sattar pleaded guilty to three counts of burglary and was jailed at Preston Crown Court.
The 52-year-old committed the first offence at around 11am on September 6 at a home in Griffin Street.
An 82-year-old heard a knock at her front door and when she answered, a man, now known to be Sattar, said he was enquiring about a dead person who used to live on the street.

Blackburn pervert jailed for texting "13-year-old girls" for sex
A pervert who tried to get two 13-year-old girls to engage in sexual acts has been jailed for 28 months.
On May 6, Jason Brian, 41, sent what he thought was a 13-year-old girl a pornographic image. He had in fact sent the image to an undercover police officer.
Still thinking he was communicating with the child, Brian moved the conversation to Snapchat and told the girl he was going to perform a sex act.
The Online Child Abuse Investigation Team found Brian, then living at Rutland Street in Blackburn, was the man responsible for sending the messages and was arrested, answered no comment in interview and was released while investigations continued.

Blackburn drunk spat at police officer and grabbed his crotch
A drunk who spat at a police officer before grabbing his crotch while handcuffed has been jailed.
Hassan Raman, who admitted to the courts he has a drink problem, was causing issues in The Mall, Blackburn, last February, when the police were called.
Preston Crown Court heard how Raman, 31, was told to move on, but police received further calls of him causing problems elsewhere in the town.
As officers went to arrest him, he spat in the direction of one of the officers and was cuffed and placed in the back of a van.

Abel-Jax Mailey: Dad jailed for life with minimum 16 years
A father who murdered his seven-week-old baby boy has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 16 years.
Oliver Mailey, 26, was jailed at Preston Crown Court following a 10-day trial in which a jury found him guilty of murdering his son, Abel-Jax Mailey, by a majority of 11-1.
Mailey, formerly of Piccadilly Road, Burnley, had previously admitted manslaughter but denied he intended to do serious harm to Abel-Jax when he shook him with what doctors described as the “force of a car crash” on the morning of November 28.

41-year-old throttled partner putting hands over her mouth and nose
A man who throttled his partner and called her a “fat c**t” has been branded a bully and a coward by a judge as he was sent to prison.
Tony Savioni was in an on-off, volatile relationship with his victim for around three years, Preston Crown Court heard, which all came to a head in July last year.
Prosecuting, Lisa Worsley said the pair had been to the pub at around 3pm on July 10, but when Savioni became moody, his then-partner decided to leave.
She went before him but stopped off at a garage on the way back, meaning he then overtook her.

Prolific offender jailed again for Burnley nursey burglary
A prolific burglar has once again been sent to jail for breaking into a nursery and then attempting to burgle someone’s house in the middle of the day.
Martin Harrington, 45, has a terrible record consisting of 61 convictions for 127 offences, many of which are for burglary, theft and dishonesty.
Burnley Crown Court heard that on August 18 last year, Harrington was caught inside a nursery with a carrier bag containing some ketchup and barbecue lighter fluid.
