PLANS are under way to resurrect a community carnival in a Blackburn suburb.

An organising committee has been set up to revive the Mill Hill Festival after a decade long gap.

It wants to hold the one-day fiesta on Saturday June 3 in New Chapel Street Park.

The original festival which ran for several years from 2008 attracted up to 2,000 people.

The organisers have launched a Facebook page 'Mill Hill Festival and Events' which has already generated an enthusiastic reaction.

So far £1,500 has been raised towards the £5,000 cost of relaunching the community music carnival including a £1,000 grant from the Blackburn with Darwen CVS Community Fund.

It is hoped that the festival will feature live bands on the stage children’s entertainment including inflatables, stalls, food outlets and a licensed bar tent.

The committee are also looking for four new members and around 10 volunteers to help run the event on the day.

It hopes to get Blackburn Rovers Community Trust involved.

Mill Hill and Moorgate ward's Cllr Damian Talbot, the borough council's public health and leisure boss, said: "We’ve formed a working group of volunteers looking to relaunch Mill Hill Festival, which was a community music festival that ran for three to four years from 2008.

"It was a one day event on New Chapel Street park.

"We had a stage with live bands, stalls and inflatables/children’s entertainment.

"We’re hoping to re-establish the event this year.

"We were looking hopefully at June 3.

"We’re seeking sponsors; concessions such as burger vans, ice-cream vans, stalls; local bands who might want to play preferably for low or no cost (covers bands and original music); a stage and audio provider; and volunteers.

"We’ve got a security company interested.

"Previously people brought their own drinks but having consulted with the police we intend to have a bar tent this year.

"Since we made our announcement on Facebook this week we’ve had lots of interest and a number of different performers have made contact."

On the Facebook page Mill Hill Station posted: "This is going to be one of the best things for our community for a long time. Let's all get behind it."

Jackie Kay posted: "Will look forward to this as it was always a great day."

And Heather Cardwell posted: "This sounds great!"
