FOR Looking Back readers of a certain age, this photograph will bring back memories of their schooldays.

Taken in the 1940s, it shows a girls’ PE class at the former Darwen Technical School where black pumps and PE skirts were the order of the day.

School gyms were like this right through to the late Seventies and beyond with wall bars and climbing ropes considered state-of-the-art.

It’s all a far cry from today’s equipment-laden gyms complete with running machines and hi-tech weight training facilities.

Rather like Marmite, you either loved or hated PE at school. Which camp did you fall into?

What excuses did you come up with to try and get out of a PE lessons or the dreaded cross country?

If you have any photos of your school PE lessons we’d love to share them with Looking Back readers. Get in touch by emailing bygones@nqnw.co.uk or leave a comment.
