The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind which affects parts of East Lancashire.

The yellow weather warning is in place today (January 12) from 3pm to 3am on Friday morning.

It covers parts of the Ribble Valley, including Longridge, Ribchester and Stonyhurst. 

Western and central parts of the county including Blackpool, Fleetwood, Lancaster, Preston and Lytham, are also covered by the warning.

The Met Office has warned anyone covered by the warning to expect possible transport delays and power cuts.  

Wind speeds in the county could reach 56mph and are set to be stronger in coastal areas.

In Longridge, winds are set to reach maximum speeds of 54mph, peaking at 11pm. The next 24 hours are also set to be blustery with a mixture of light and heavy rain in the forecast.

Blackburn with Darwen isn’t covered by the weather warning but it is still expected to be windy today, with wind speeds of 50mph in the forecast.

A Met Office spokesperson has warned the public to expect “severe gales”, especially in hilly and coastal areas

They said: “A squally band of heavy rain arrives towards midday, this clears to leave a mixture of sunny spells and showers for the afternoon. Strong winds with gales over hills and coasts. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

“Further outbreaks of rain spread southwards across the region during the evening and winds strengthening with gales developing widely inland and severe gales possible over hills and coasts. Minimum temperature 5 °C.

“A windy start is expected on Friday with showers throughout the morning. Winds will easing for the afternoon, although it is likely the risk of showers will persist. Feeling colder. Maximum temperature 8°C.”
