A gym in an East Lancashire school is set to reopen to the public this month after a full refurbishment.

The fitness suite at Hyndburn Academy in Stourton Street, Rishton, closed at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020.

The opportunity was taken to give it a complete revamp.

Now the fitness centre, previously known as the Norden Gym, is ready to spring back into action with a brand-new look and feel, as well as the latest cardiovascular equipment, strength machines and free weights.

Hyndburn Academy principal Nicola Palmer said: “The space looks fantastic - we’re thrilled with how it’s turned out.

“We’re the only gym in the area, so there’s a real benefit for the local community as well as our students.

"We’re really excited for the public to see it and share in it.”

Hyndburn Leisure chief executive Lyndsey Sims added: "Exercise should be a right, not a luxury.

“That’s why with a Hyndburn Academy Sport and Leisure gym membership, you can pay as you go - there’s no contract and no cancellation fee.

"Someone on a standard membership who’s going twice a week is paying less than £2 per visit.”

The gym will be open to members on weekday evenings and weekends.

Concessions are available for students and over-60s as well as a special introductory deal available for the first 20 people to sign up.

The standard public membership fee has been pegged at an affordable £15 a month.

Linda Horsfield, head of health and wellbeing at Hyndburn Leisure, said: “We’re anticipating a lot of interest, especially as we’re opening in January when people are kicking off the year with some good habits.

"Why not make 2023 the year you do something for yourself and your fitness?”
