The Fire and Rescue service has issued a safety warning after a tumble dryer caught fire in Penwortham.
The fire service shared an image of a tumble dryer, that had been partially melted and burned by the fire, urging people to never leave them unattended.
A spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue service said: “Firefighters in Penwortham were called out to this fire involving a tumble dryer.
“This is why you should never use them when you're out or asleep in bed.”
According to the Fire and Rescue website, tumble dryer fires can occur at any time of the year, but we rely on them more during the colder and damper weather.
This can sometimes mean firefighters see an increase in the number of incidents involving dryer machines, especially in winter.
Here are some safety tips and advice to consider:
- Clean dryer filters after every use.
- Vacuum heater areas or vent pipe connections every six months.
- Follow the manufacturers use and maintenance instructions.
- Don’t overload the machine.
- Avoid leaving your washer and dryer unattended when it is in use.
- Don’t ignore the warning signs. Watch out for burning smells, check if clothes feel hotter than usual or if they are taking longer to dry.
- Call an engineer if you think there might be an issue.
