Rossendale Council has announced the changes to bin collection dates for the period over Christmas and New Year.

They are also encouraging residents to recycle as much as possible and to 'Check Before You Chuck'.

The council will be offering a Christmas tree collection service between January 9 and January 28.

Trees for collection must be real and not artificial, and should be free from ornaments and lights.

Collected trees will be shredded and the organic material recycled.

To arrange a collection, go to the Rossendale Borough Council website.

A spokesperson for the council said: "We've tried to keep disruption to a minimum and in most cases people's collection days have just moved forward by a day.

"We would remind residents to maybe put their bins out the night before collection so as to not ruin their lie-ins.

"There is a lot of extra rubbish at Christmas, all the wrapping paper and the boxes toys and gifts come in and possibly extra bottles.

"Please check before you just chuck it in the general waste bin as a lot can and should be recycled. If you're unsure what can and cannot be recycled go to Check Before You Chuck for more information.

"Most wrapping paper can be recycled apart from the foil or metallic ones. A good test to see if it can be recycled is the scrunch test.

"If you can scrunch the paper into a ball and it keeps its shape it can be recycled. If it springs back and doesn't stay in a ball it can't be recycled and you should chuck it in the general waste bin."

The changes are as follows:

  • All waste that would normally collected on Tuesday, December 27, will now be collected on Wednesday, December 28
  • All waste that would normally be collected on Wednesday, December 28, will now be collected on Thursday, December 29
