Police have issued another warning after young people were spotted playing on a frozen canal and river.

Lancaster Area Police has urged the public to stay off the ice following reports of young people playing on Lancaster Canal and the River Lune.

Neighbourhood patrols will be out in these locations this evening (December 15).

The warning comes after four children, aged six, eight, 10 and 11, died after falling to a lake near Solihull earlier this month.

A police spokesperson said: “This afternoon we have received reports of youths playing on ice on the canal and on the River Lune.

“Please ‘stay off the ice’ this is incredibly dangerous and puts you at serious risk of harm.

“Neighbourhood patrols will be out this evening checking these locations.”

Police forces across Lancashire have issued several warnings this week after people were spotted playin on waterways.

On Tuesday, Blackburn with Darwen Police said it has received reports that young people are attempting to skate on the ice of open water and are asking people to remain vigilant.

Blackpool Police also issued a warning after being made aware of a group of young people walking and playing on a frozen lake in Stanley Park.

Earlier this week a dog was also rescued from Foulridge Reservoir after getting stuck.

On Wednesday evening, emergency services were called after concerns that young boys were walking on a frozen canal in Blackburn.

Crews conducted a thorough search of the area and were on site for several hours, but concluded no one was present at the scene.
