Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a man was killed when a car crashed into a tree on Saturday night.

Police were called at around 10pm on Saturday, December 10, to reports of a car crashing into a tree in Royds Avenue, Accrington.

A man suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.

A 24-year-old man from Blackburn and a 42-year-old man from Accrington were arrested at the scene on suspicion of death by dangerous driving.

They remain in police custody today and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash has been launched.

The incident has triggered further calls from councillors for improved road safety along the residential street.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “We were called around 10.05pm yesterday (Saturday, December 10) to a report of a serious collision on Royds Avenue in Accrington, where it was reported a car had collided with a tree.

“Emergency services attended and found a man with multiple injuries. Sadly, he was pronounced dead a short time later. Our thoughts remain with his family at this difficult time.

“We have now launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses and any dashcam footage to assist us.

"Any information, no matter how seemingly insignificant or small, could assist our enquiries.”

Barnfield ward Councillor June Harrison has said councillor have been asking for further road safety measures along Royds Avenue for some time.

The road already has a 20mph speed limit.

She said: “I have been trying to get something done about speeding on Royds Avenue for years.

"The residents have been complaining for years too because the drivers just don’t take any notice.

“They always act when it’s too late, but it can’t keep happening. People in politics say ‘we learn from our mistakes’ but we’ve been asking for speed checks and police to go out and patrol but they haven’t so something serious was bound to happen.”

Royds Avenue straddles the Barnfield and Baxenden wards in Hyndburn, and Cllr Harrison's colleagues in the neighbouring ward have backed calls for action.

Cllr Terry Hurn said: “I’ve been in touch with county countil about the situation on Royds Avenue with the speeding, and I have had them put a box up to check the average speed to put some measure in place to calm the traffic.

"But as it stands at moment, the council keep saying it isn’t too bad so I will continue pursuing this because it is a problem where cars are travelling at quite a speed.

“I am in contact with Lancashire County Council Road team about this.

"It shouldn’t have to take a fatality, but hopefully now measures will get put in place to prevent this happening again.

"I will be pursuing this with the county council next week.”

If you can assist with the police's investigation, you are asked to call the constabulary on 101, quoting log number 1533 of December 10.
