Great Harwood councillors are appealing to the council for road safety interventions following a recent accident on Blackburn Road.

Cllr Noordad Aziz and Cllr Scott Brerton placed stickers and a banner at a ‘hotspot’ in Great Harwood over the weekend where accidents frequently happen, hoping drivers will travel around the area with ease.

And they are now hoping for interventions to be put in place to prevent more accidents from happening in the future.

Cllr Noordad Aziz said: “Following another accident on Blackburn Road in Great Harwood I have written to the new cabinet for highways at County Hall, Cllr Rupert Swarbrick asking for an urgent site visit, which have been unfulfilled despite numerous requests.

“I and Councillor Scott Brerton have been out putting up a "Slow Down Save Lives" banner and stickers on Blackburn Road to highlight to drivers a reminder.

“Hopefully it will remind some drivers to check their speed and prevent more accidents.

“We seem to have a constant issue around road safety with there being numerous accidents and we had a fatality a couple of years ago where a resident was unfortunately killed.

“And it is just about raising awareness but also asking the council for more intervention around safety measures because it seems to be a continuous problem area in the town.

“There seems to be constant issues with there being accidents and it has got a higher average than other areas and residents are concerned.

“I want to raise awareness but also ask the county council to visit and see the challenges that residents face on a daily basis.

“Residents are concerned about the constant accidents happening with parked cars specifically and speeding being a constant complaint and safety for pedestrians.

“The Great Harwood Labour team will continue to be proactive in asking for more road safety measures in the town.

“I will be working with Cllr Jodi Clements, Cllr Colin McKenzie, and Cllr Scott Brerton and I personally believe there needs to be some intervention looking at road furniture, something to do with the speed by reducing it to 20mph and adding speed intervention such as speed cameras.”

Cllr Swarbrick only became cabinet member last Friday so hasn't had a chance to respond to Cllr Aziz's request for a meeting.

However, County Councillor Rupert Swarbrick, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We're always working to make our roads safer, and collaborate closely with the police through the Lancashire Road Safety Partnership to reduce casualties by enforcing speed limits, educating drivers and investing in physical safety measures where appropriate.

"Our road safety team is currently investigating speed and collision data at a number of locations including Blackburn Road to inform priorities for inclusion in next year's highways safety schemes programme."
