A police officer has been praised for his service and kindness after surprising a resident with £100 from the sale of an antique.

PC John Webster from Chorley police had a busy start to his day yesterday (Thursday, November 17) with two arrests which also saw PC John seizing a knife.

Amongst all the chaos and crime, PC John managed to fit in an “amazing good deed”.

As part of Operation Sceptre, people have been surrendering weapons to the police, and on Wednesday (November 16), PC John collected what appeared to be an antique German sword and a Magnum air pistol which belonged to a lady called Margaret’s late husband.

After some inspection, officers realised that the items could be worth a lot in value and advised Margaret to try and sell the items. Margaret informed them she wasn’t able to leave the house for them to be sold and instead of just accepting this, the caring cop decided to take a more personal approach.

PC John attended an auction bouse but it turned out the sword was a replica. He did, however, attend a local gun shop and was able to make £100 for the sale of the air pistol.

With £100 in his pocket, PC John made his way back to the house and gave Margaret the £100 and she was “absolutely delighted.”

A spokesperson for the police said: “In the current climate with the rising cost of living Margaret was able to get £100 which she wouldn't have been able to get ordinarily. All this because of PC John Webster.

“Not all heroes wear capes.”

Hundreds of residents have expressed their admiration on Facebook with one resident commenting on Chorley Police’s post: “Thank you for your service and kindness. You made me smile on this miserable rainy day.”
