A new police campaign is encouraging people to hand in weapons at designated bins.

Throughout Lancashire, police teams said they are working together with partner organisations to visit schools to educate young people, search for knives in public places and conduct high visibility patrols.

They are also using metal detecting arches to identify people who may be carrying knives and give advice to shops on the laws on selling knives.

Operation Sceptre is a week of action which aims to prevent knife crime all year round.

In Rossendale, the knife bin outside Waterfoot Police Station was emptied on Tuesday (November 15) where 141 kitchen knives, a knuckle duster, a baton, four swords, a gravity knife and a machete were discovered.

Police said some of these weapons are covered in the recent changes in legislation by the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 which came into force last year, which make certain weapons illegal to possess anywhere in your home or in public.

Police also released an image of some of the knives surrendered at the new bin installed in Union Street, Accrington.
