Thousands descended upon Witton Park, Blackburn for the annual charity bonfire and firework display.

The annual event remains one of the best attended events of year.

The fire was lit at 8pm half an hour later than planned as hundreds queued to get into Witton Park. The queues stretched back on to Preston Old Road but volunteers soon arranged more ticket check points which quickened up entry for the visitors.

The event was organised by Blackburn Round Table, Blackburn Lions, Blackburn Rotary club, and the Blackburn 41 Club and included fairground rides, live music, food and drinks stalls.

The highlight of the night was the stunning firework display which took place at a slightly delayed time of 8.30pm.

Rosy who had travelled from Mellor said: “We got in early and there was loads to do for the kids.

“It was lovely to see so many people here. It got a little busy at times but we enjoyed it.”

Saima and family said they tried to come every year. She said: “We make an effort to attend every year.

“The kids love it. The fireworks and the rides were the best.

“We had to queue even though we had a ticket. But it moved really fast. The people at the gate were really friendly and welcomed us with a smile.”

The event helps to raise thousands for charity with adult tickets priced at £4 and children at 50p. Most people had bought online to take advantage of the early bird offer but many others still paid the extra £1 at the gate.

Traffic along Preston Old Road was brought to a standstill as crowds headed home after 9pm. It was not helped by the traffic lights at the Preston New Road and Buncer Lane junction which allowed approximately ten vehicles through at a time through.

With the majority of the vehicles heading towards Redlam the lights 'malfunction' meant traffic was backed up all the way up to Pleasington.
