A boy from East Lancashire is making sure our four-legged friends can take part in trick or treating this Halloween after making them their very own treat station.
Nine-year-old Jack Oates-Readett, from Great Harwood, has created a Halloween treat station for dogs filled with pet-friendly biscuits.
Jack’s mum, Joanne Oates-Readett, said Jack loves animals and wanted to make sure they are included on the spookiest night of the year.
She said: “Jack is a huge animal lover and he wants to work at a rescue centre when he’s older.
“We have two dogs but Jack loves to meet and greet all the dogs that pass us by too.
“He always asks if he’s allowed to pet them and if he has any dog treats in his pocket he’d ask the owner if they were allowed one.”
Jack wanted to create the pet treat station as their Martholme Lane home doesn’t get many human trick or treaters.
Joanne said: “We moved to Martholme Lane a year ago and whilst we used to get lots of trick-or-treaters in our old house, last year we didn’t get any because no kids come down our lane at night, but we do get lots and lots of dogs walking past.
“Since we aren’t likely to get many human trick or treaters coming by, he thought he would set up a trick or treat station for all the dogs that pass our house.
“He thought it would be a nice surprise for them.”
As well as leaving baskets of biscuits and meaty treats, Jack also decorated the area and made signs that say ‘trick or treat’ and ‘happy howlaween’.
Joanne said: “He used our old Halloween decorations and pumpkins to make sure the dogs saw that the biscuits were there.”
Jack’s kind gesture has already been recognised in the community, attracting dog walkers and receiving overwhelming support on Facebook.
Joanne said: “As we were putting them up a couple of dogs went past and Jack asked their owners if they would like a treat. He loves making them happy.
“I only put it on a Facebook community group because I didn’t want Jack to be disappointed if no-one took them.
“He and I have been overwhelmed by the response from people. They’ve sent pictures of their dogs dressed up enjoying the treats.
“It’s been a lovely thing to do and we are really enjoying giving a bit of joy to dogs walking past our house.”
