More than 20 people from East Lancashire were jailed in October for committing a range of crimes across the county. 

From murder to violent honour based abuse, kidnap to drugs, burglary to knife crime - the courts have seen it all, and the judges have handed down sentences to ensure justice is served.

Here's a round up of all the criminals put behind bars last month:

Burglar jailed after stealing and using bank cards from house

A prolific burglar who stole bank cards from a house and used them in nearby shops just 20 minutes later has been jailed.

Willliam Penman, 36, has been locked up for three years after stealing car keys and wallets from a house, and spending more than £100 on the bank cards just minutes later.

Prosecuting, Stephen Parker told Burnley Crown Court the victim, a Mr Walsh, had left his house in Waidshouse Road, Nelson, at about 6am on September 10, taking his dog for a walk and leaving the back door unlocked as his wife was upstairs in bed.

Man jailed over armed robbery of Darwen Co-op

A man who threatened a member of staff with a knife in a robbery at a Co-op store in Darwen has been jailed for more than two years.

Appearing at Preston Sessions House, Alec Harris, 27, was sentenced for robbery, attempted robbery and possession of a bladed article, relating to the incident on June 20.

Harris, of Astbury Chase, Darwen, entered the Co-op store in Blackburn Road at 8.20pm with his hood up. He picked up a box of lager before approaching the till.

CCTV footage showed how Harris waited while a member of the public paid for their shopping before moving towards the till.

Blackburn man jailed after threatening to 'chop up' ex-partner

A Blackburn man has been jailed after he breached a restraining order, stalking his ex-partner, and threatening extreme violence against her.

Samuel Chadwick, 32, appeared at Preston Crown Court on Thursday, October 13, for breaching his restraining order and for stalking with fear of violence charges.

The court heard how Chadwick, of Livesey Branch Road, Blackburn, was in a three-month relationship with his ex-partner from March 2020 and they had a child together.

They broke up for a period after some violence occurred and got back together again in April 2022, but this didn't last long.

30-year-old man jailed for having sex with 15-year-old girl

A man who said he entered into a "consensual sexual relationship" with a child almost half his age, telling his friends that she was about to turn 18, has been jailed.

Joshua Carter Denson, originally from Nelson, was arrested on a European warrant in Malta in May and spent time in a Greek prison before being extradited back into the country to answer for his crimes.

He pleaded guilty to seven counts of sexual activity with a child and making indecent images of her and was sentenced at Burnley Crown Court.

Sex offender, Steven Duxbury, jailed over Blackburn Market exposure incident

A pensioner who exposed himself to a 12-year-old girl in Blackburn Market before masturbating in full view of the public has been jailed.

Preston Crown Court heard when 71-year-old Steven Duxbury noticed the schoolgirl in the market at around 3.30pm on June 17, he was "unable to control himself".

The pervert began performing a sex act while staring at her, licking his lips, and making groaning noises.

Horrified, the girl, who was in her school uniform, told her mother, who turned and saw the defendant in the middle of his lewd act.

Clayton-le-Moors burglar stole mobile phone from naked woman

A man who entered a flat and stole a mobile phone from the bed where a woman was sleeping naked with her baby has been jailed.

Jason Ludlum, 51, also stole a nail gun from the property, in Piccadilly Road, Burnley, on August 4, before leaving through an unlocked back door.

Burnley Crown Court heard Ludlum was accompanied by his son (who will be sentenced at a later date), on the night in question, when he entered the property at around 3am.

Prosecuting, Stephen Parker said the victim was on the bed with her seven-month-old baby, and due to the summer heat, was sleeping naked.

Jail for Burnley man who denied sexual assault

A man who sexually assaulted a young girl while she was asleep has been jailed.

Patrick Meeks denied any wrongdoing when the incident was reported to the police in 2019, and after being charged with the offence maintained his innocence, and took the case to trial.

However, in June, following a five-day hearing, he was found guilty of assault by penetration against his child victim.

In a statement, the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said the incident, which happened in Burnley more than three years ago, left her anxious, and for a while she was self-harming as people refused to believe her, with some telling her, “you probably asked for it”.

Crawshawbooth woman left with fractured eye socket after pal 'lost the plot'

A woman was left with a fractured eye socket after her friend launched an ornamental candlestick holder at her face when he “lost the plot”.

Luke Hunton, of Major Street, Crawshawbooth, was sentenced to 12 months in prison on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm upon his friend Donna Mountain on June 19, 2021, but walked free from court.

Burnley Crown Court heard how Hunton and Miss Mountain had known each other as she had been in a relationship with his brother, and on the day in question they had been taking a car journey together along with the defendant’s young son.

Jail for woman who stabbed partner in back with kitchen knife

A woman who stabbed her partner in the back with a kitchen knife, and then attacked him again with screwdriver six months later, has been jailed.

Burnley Crown Court heard how Carrie-Anne Chippendale stabbed Paul Inskip between his shoulder blades during a drink-fuelled row in December last year.

An ambulance was called to the couple’s home address in York Street, Burnley, followed by the police, after the attack.

Prosecuting, Emma Kehoe said: “The defendant and the victim were highly intoxicated, and it seems there has been an argument between the two.”

Woman had to pull man's testicles to escape his attack

A prolific woman beater has been jailed for biting, pinning down and punching his ex-girlfriend who had to pull on his testicles to get him off.

Nathan Hirst, also known as Nathan Beards, was in breach of a suspended sentence for affray when he bit his then-girlfriend on the face and pinned her chest down with his knee, all because her daughter had come home from a sleepover.

Lisa Worsley, prosecuting at Burnley Crown Court said Hirst’s ex-partner spoke of how the pair had been in a relationship since 2019.

Scaffolder jailed after attack his own mother near Clitheroe

A ‘loving’ mother thought her son was going to kill her as he punched her repeatedly in the face and pulled out her hair.

Tyrone Howarth, 32, attacked his frightened mother Pamela Howarth in her home, where he also lived, drunk and angry.

Lisa Worsley, prosecuting at Burnley Crown Court, said Howarth was due to see his son on Friday, September 16, but at the last minute his ex-partner pulled out.

Angered by this, Howarth went out drinking before returning to his mother’s flat in Mill Court, Sabden, near Clitheroe, where he had lived for about six months.

Burnley man threw curry powder in woman's face during fight

A man who said he was caught in a love triangle threatened a woman he was "infatuated with" with a fake gun, before throwing "curry powder" in her face.

Andrew Hoyle, 47, said he was caught in the middle of a love triangle with two women, Chantelle McDonald and Jenna Stanworth, when the three ended up in a fight outside his house.

Prosecuting, Stephen Parker told Burnley Crown Court Ms McDonald and Hoyle were, according to him, in a relationship.

However, Ms McDonald denied this, saying Hoyle was ‘infatuated’ with her, and she was in fact in a relationship with Stanworth, who pleaded guilty to affray for her role in the fight.

Drink driver can't remember police chase through Rossendale

A "functioning alcoholic" who was three times over the limit cannot remember "swerving all over the road" as he led police on a lengthy chase around Rossendale.

Tyrone Howarth, 32, was jailed for his prolonged dangerous drunk driving and was jailed at the same time for beating up his mother in a separate incident.

Lisa Worsley, prosecuting at Burnley Crown Court, said PC Simon Grant was in an unmarked car on March 18, just before 8.30pm, when he spotted a Vauxhall Estate being driven on the A56 swerving left and right across the lanes of the dual carriageway.

Thief and heroin addict jailed for three Blackburn burglaries

A prolific thief and long-term heroin addict has been jailed again for committing three burglaries in Blackburn.

The occupants of the homes were present in all three of the burglaries, with children asleep in at least two of the properties.

James Tweedy, 44, appeared at Preston Crown Court via video link from prison, and entered guilty pleas to three dwelling burglaries and four counts of fraud, which took place in Blackburn last month.

Burnley sex offender dressed as schoolgirl and took runaway boys home

A convicted sex offender has been jailed after dressing up as a schoolgirl in order to talk to pupils, before taking two runaway boys back to his house and feeding them cigarettes and cider.

In 2019, Mark Nicholson was jailed for 18 months for child sex offences, and was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years, but breached this twice when he carried out his most recent crimes.

Preston Crown Court heard how the first breach happened on November 3 last year, when the 55-year-old was spotted on Queen Victoria Road by three schoolgirls from Blessed Trinity College.

Drug-dealing Blackburn brothers kidnapped and tortured man

These are the faces of the violent drug-dealing Blackburn brothers who callously kidnapped, tortured and left an innocent man to die in a terrifying case of mistaken identity.

Preston Crown Court heard the sordid story of Faisal and Faizaan Fareed, siblings who considered themselves gangsters.

The pair were obsessed with weapons and drugs and between August 2020 and January 2021, dealt heroin, cocaine and cannabis from a property on Sandon Street in Blackburn.

Father and son jailed for 'honour-based violence' attack

A father and son have been jailed after they brutally attacked and beat their 16-year-old daughter and sister in a case of honour-based violence.

The pair, aged 53 and 22 respectively, and who cannot be named for legal reasons, were sentenced at Preston Crown Court earlier this week after they admitted to assault occasioning actual bodily harm at a property in Pendle.

The offence happened on May 14 after the 16-year-old victim, who also cannot be named for legal reasons, had returned home having gone to the shop for around 10 to 15 minutes to get some fresh air.

Mumtaz Ahmed sentenced to life imprisonment for murder of his mum in Burnley

A man who murdered his mother has been jailed for life and must serve a minimum of 22 years before he can be considered for release.

Mumtaz Ahmed, 43, was found guilty by a jury on October 18 of stamping on and kicking 85-year-old Inayat Begum to death at the home they shared in Prairie Crescent, Burnley.

The court heard how Ahmed called an ambulance to the property at about 3.30am on Sunday, April 24, and told emergency services his mum was on the floor and not breathing after a fall.

Blackburn man who stabbed girlfriend walks free despite jail term

A man has walked free from court despite receiving a jail sentence, after he wounded his ex-partner in a ‘brutal attack’.

Mirza Farid, 27, of Gloucester Road, Blackburn, appeared at Crown Court in Preston on Wednesday, October 12, to be sentenced after pleading guilty to wounding and grievous bodily harm.

Paul Brookwell, prosecuting, told the court how Farid went to his girlfriend of two years at the time's address in New Church Close, Blackburn, on May 19 at 6.30am.

They had both had been drinking alcohol through the night, and Farid proceeded to pick up a mirror off the fireplace before smashing it on the floor.

Wilpshire dad who thought he was speaking to 'schoolgirls' jailed

A father asked supposed schoolgirls to make "sucking and moaning sounds" while watching videos of him "playing with himself".

Neil Pickup, 40, has been jailed for 12 months after he was found talking to two girls who he believed to be 12 and 13.

Robert Wyn Jones, prosecuting, told Preston Crown Court that both ‘Emily’ and ‘Elle’ were actually decoy accounts made by so-called paedophile hunting groups.

Pickup, of Parsonage Road, Wilpshire,  met ‘Emily’ on a website on January 4 with the pair quickly exchanging numbers and starting to talk on WhatsApp.

Burnley men jailed after stealing victims car before going onto stealing another

Two Burnley men have been jailed after they threatened their victim and stole her car before going onto stealing another two days later.

Mohammed Adrees, 21, and Qadar Ali, 26, were before Recorder Daniel Lister at Burnley Crown Court on Monday for offences of robbery and aggravated vehicle taking.

The court heard from prosecutor Stephen Parker, how on October 7, 2020, Adrees, of Francis Street, Burnley, and Ali, of Granville Street, Burnley, approached their victim at 8.20pm, while she was sat in her car on her mobile phone in the ASDA car park in Burnley.
