An East Lancashire MP has called on the government to do more to ensure that grassroots sports clubs have the green land to train and play on.
Hyndburn Conservative backbencher Sara Britcliffe tackled Leader of the Commons Penny Mordaunt on the issue in the House of Commons.
She called for a special debate on the issue attended by a government minister.
The intervention at Westminster followed her meeting representatives of Accrington Wildcats amateur rugby league club and Huncoat United football clubs.
Both are having difficulties securing regular playing and training facilities.
Miss Britcliffe told Mrs Mordaunt in Business Questions: “Grassroots clubs and sports are vital to communities such as mine in Hyndburn and Haslingden.
"I have some fantastic clubs, such as Huncoat United and Accrington Wildcats, but they need support to ensure that they have not only the vital green spaces they need to train, but the funding to exist.
"Will you allow a debate in government time on how we can continue to support grassroots clubs and sports?”
Mrs Mordaunt replied: “I thank you for raising this important issue.
"I shall certainly flag what you have said with the relevant department.
"You will know how to apply for a debate, and I think it will be a well-attended one if you secure it.”
