A ‘witty’ Blackburn resident who has been described as ‘the queen of the care home’ is preparing for her 100th birthday celebrations later this month.

The staff at Feng Shui Care Home are helping to organise a party for 99-year-old Marion Gregson who has been looking forward to celebrating her milestone birthday.

Marion used to work at Mill Hill before retiring in her early 60s so regularly reminds the staff that ‘she might be deaf but she can lip read’, making everyone around her laugh constantly with her witty remarks.

Brenda Sumner, manager at the Feng Shui Care Home, shared how much of a delight Marion is to be around.

She said: “She’s just a wonderful, witty, and vibrant lady who is the absolute queen of this place. She’s full of charm and always speaks her mind, but from the best seat in the house.”

Brenda said Marion was ‘gutted’ about not being able to receive a birthday congratulatory message from The Queen. “That was one thing she was sad about but did say, ‘a card from The King will do’.”

Marion has a daughter, Julie Nutter and a son called Brian, and two grandsons - Matthew and Christopher. Despite her turning 100, Brenda added that the Marion is still extremely mobile and ‘doesn’t at all look her age.’

“If you saw her, you wouldn’t believe it," Brenda said. "She’s so lively, still walking about and always singing. She loves playing quizzes and games to keep her brain stimulated, so she is just an incredible woman.”

Sharon, a carer at the home shared how much joy Marion brings to her days at work.

She said: “She’s a very funny character, and a little love and a pleasure to look after.

"The party is on my day off but I’m coming up which says a lot about her doesn’t it. She’s an amazing lady.”

Marion is a huge seafood lover so the owner of the care home is preparing a feast fit for the queen of the care home with a lobster and salmon spread.

Since she loves singing so much, the activities coordinator Kirk has arranged for a singer to perform to Marion and all her guests at the party.

Surrounded by her family, friends and care home staff, Marion will be turning 100 on October 27 at Feng Shui House Care Home.

Brenda added: “She’s a charming woman and we can’t wait to give her a celebration she deserves.”
