It has been confirmed a man and a woman have died following a crash between an HGV and a car on a busy A-road.

Police have now launched an investigation following the fatal collision, which happened around 10.45am yesterday (Thursday, October 6).

Officers were called to the A59 Gisburn Road near Sawley at 10.48am after receiving reports of a serious crash involving an HGV and a Chrysler car.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the occupants of the car, a man and a woman in their 60s, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The A59 was closed for several hours while police carried out work at the scene.

A spokesperson for the police said last night: "An investigation is underway after a fatal collision in Sawley today (Thursday, October 6).

"We were called to Gisburn Road at 10.48am to reports of a serious collision involving a HGV and a Chrysler car.

"Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the occupants of the car - a man and woman in their 60s - were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this extremely distressing time."

The driver of the HGV was not seriously injured.
