A family are donating a historic image of Darwen Tower in memory of a much-loved Darwen businessman who died earlier this year.

Lindsay Kitchen found the picture tucked amongst the possessions left by her dad, Glenn who sadly passed away aged 57 in March leaving behind three daughters.

The picture appears to show the Jubilee Tower in the final stages of being completed and could be from the turn of the century.

Lindsay said: “He was always into collecting things and this image of soldiers would make a perfect donation to the Darwen Heritage Centre.

“We were so surprised when we saw this picture. I had never seen anything else like this before. I was a little speechless if I am going to be honest.

“He was really proud of Darwen and a lot of people in the area knew of him and loved him.

“He has collected a lot of antiques over recent years. It would be a nice tribute to him knowing that something he collected was being seen by people who could admire the history of Darwen and the borough.

“He would love the fact that people were able to see this.”

Glenn ran the firm Metex which was first established by his dad Tom. Both Tom and wife Joan had lived and worked in Darwen for many years.

The company was one of the oldest firms in the area and Glenn was well known by many people in the local community.

Lindsay, who now lives in Sheffield, added: “He had a few hobbies that kept him busy. He supported Blackburn Rovers and also had a fantastic vinyl music collection. It was something he was really proud of.

“As young girls we grew up listening to some of the amazing bands and singers he had collected over the years.”

Lindsay is hoping to join sisters Chelsea and Emily in presenting the picture to the heritage centre next month.

Based at Holker House, Darwen Heritage Centre is dedicated to the history of the town and is run by a group of dedicated volunteers. It provides displays, regular illustrated talks and various exhibitions on all aspects of the town’s history.
