A MAN is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after an alleged stab attack inside his home.

The 33-year-old man was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital for emergency surgery following the incident at the house in Water Street, Accrington.

He is now said to be recovering from his injuries.

Police were called to the terraced property, on the outskirts of the town centre, at around 6pm yesterday following reports of a disturbance.

Officers later arrested a 26-year-old local man on suspicion of assault.

He was due to be questioned by police.

Police forensic teams were at the house today.

A Water Street resident, who asked not to be named, said: "I heard quite a lot of banging going on and then there was a police officer stood outside the door step in the morning.

"I asked him what was going on and he said the lad who lived there had been taken to hospital.

"There are always a lot of people going in and out of the house but they use the front door rather than the back door.

"I don't see much of him."

Another neighbour, who also asked to remain anonymous, added: "The man who lives there keeps himself to himself, although he is always polite if you see him in the street. "

Det Insp Stephen Dowson of Accrington CID, said: "A male was subjected to a serious assault at an address in Accrington and is now in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

"We would appeal for anybody with information to come forward."
