A TOP TV writer from Burnley opened his studio to budding North West programme makers to share the secrets of his success.

Paul Abbott, who writes Shameless and Clocking Off, gave a talk to members of the Indie Club- a networking group representing all of Manchester's independent production companies.

The Indie Club meets on the first Monday of each month, with a selection of speakers offering advice and inspiration to 120 members.

Speaking at the event, Paul explained he had set up his writers' studio, Voice Box, just over a year ago, as a way of fighting back against TV executives with set, commercially-focussed ideas.

He said: "I got fed-up of the way people got in the way of making TV.

"So many people think they can do it, but in reality they simply stop the writers getting on with what they do best.

"It was a really hard thing to pull off, but I knew we had to give writers control and ownership of their own work."
