THE mum of a nine-year-old boy who fractured his skull after falling from a gate said he is making a 'remarkable' recovery.

Lynsey Burdett, of Sandhurst Street, Burnley, has been at the bedside of her son Callum Taylor since the accident as he played near outside Astley House near his home in Albert Street, Burnley, on March 23.

Callum was transferred to a specialist trauma unit at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury and regained consciousness a few days later.

Ms Burdett said he was now walking and talking although he still cannot move his right arm and his speech is slurred.

But the family are hoping he will make a full recovery.

Ms Burdett said her son remembered the gate swinging into his head.

The mother-of-five said: "He is talking and walking - this is fantastic. He is making a remarkable recovery and we are so relieved he is awake.

"But he is not 100 per cent and whether he will make full recovery is up in the air.He can't move his right arm."

Callum's brothers and sisters, Sinead Taylor, Mark Burdett, Sharon Burdett and Summer Taylor, have been visiting him regularly.

Ms Burdett, who has taken time off from her job as a cleaner, said: "It has been hard on everyone. He was fighting for his life and we are so relieved he is awake. Our prayers have been answered."

The youngster was initially taken to the Royal Black-burn Hospital before being transferred to Pendlebury.

He has received more than 50 get well cards, many from school friends.

Neighbours living near Astley House have been calling for something to be done to clear the site, which is often covered with litter and broken glass.

Police and safety officials are investigating.
