A COMMUNITY has been left shocked by the sudden death of its "inspirational" parish priest.

Father Patrick Bourke, who has been priest at St Mary's RC Church in Oswaldtwistle for 24 years, was found dead in bed on Thursday morning.

Fr Bourke, who was in his late 60s, is believed to have been found by staff at a hotel in Cockermouth, in the Lake District, where he had gone on holiday for several days.

His death has left parishioners "shocked and saddened".

Stephen Wells, headteacher at St Mary's RC Primary School where Fr Bourke has been chair of governors for more than 20 years, said: "It was a shock to us all.

"I only saw Fr Bourke on Tuesday, when he came to hold Mass at school as he did every week. We had a coffee and a chat after Mass.

"He seemed fine, and was looking forward to a few days' rest in Cockermouth after the Easter celebrations."

Mr Wells, who was appointed as head of the Mayfield Avenue school by Fr Bourke 13 years ago, said: "The children were very sad and shocked when we told them.

"His church and parish were his whole life, and he was interested overall in helping people."

A special Mass was led by Fr David Lupton from St James the Less in Rawtenstall, at St Mary's Church on Thursday night, attended by scores of people.

Fr Bourke was also chair of governors at St Oswald's RC Primary in Accrington, and on the governing board of Mount Carmel RC Science College in Oswaldtwistle.

Hyndburn Council leader Coun Peter Britcliffe added: "I always found Fr Bourke to be an inspirational person. It is a sad loss for the town."

Born in Ireland, Fr Bourke moved to England after he was ordained, and led a parish in Little Hulton, Salford, before moving to Oswaldtwistle.

He celebrated 40 years as a parish priest in 2005.

His funeral will be held at St Mary's RC Church in Catlow Hall Lane on Friday morning, before his body is returned to Ireland, where he is survived by two brothers.
