Universities across Lancashire have been sharing photos and memories of when Queen Elizabeth II visited them in the past.

Myerscough College and University Centre and The University of Central Lancashire (UClan) in Preston have shared tributes of the Queen who died on Thursday (September 8).

The Queen visited Myerscough College and University Centre in 1969 when she attended official opening of Myerscough College’s Bilsborrow campus.

The College was honoured that the Queen accepted a formal invitation to open the site.

At 3.40pm, Her Majesty arrived to be greeted by dignitaries and College staff, before touring the library, unveiling an official plaque at the Lecture Theatre, and then viewing a display of College work.

Alison Robinson, chief executive and principal, said: “On behalf of everyone at Myerscough College and University Centre, I wish to express our deepest condolences to the Royal family, following the shattering news of the death of Her Majesty, The Queen.

“Queen Elizabeth holds an extra special place in the hearts of everyone here at Myerscough, and we were honoured and privileged to welcome her to our main Bilsborrow campus on three occasions.

“Her Majesty officially opened our centre here back in October, 1969, before further visits in 1999, when she opened our new library building with the Duke of Edinburgh, and more recently, in 2015, when we were delighted to give her a tour of our Lodge Farm site.

“Her legacy will remain deeply engrained with the history of the College forever, and we are deeply saddened by today’s news.”

Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh visited UCLan in 2012 as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

University of Central Lancashire vice-chancellor Professor Graham Baldwin said: "The University of Central Lancashire community is very saddened to hear today of the passing of Her Majesty who dedicated her life to public service and civic duty for the country. Her contribution to the nation, over many decades, has been extraordinary.

“Many at the University will still remember one of the proudest days in our history when in 2012 we were honoured to welcome Her Majesty and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to our Burnley Campus as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the Royal Family at this very difficult time."
