Queen Elizabeth II has died after 70 long years on the throne. Now, we are looking back at the times she visited towns in East Lancashire.
Queen Elizabeth visited Burnley several times during her reign.
In 2012, thousands lined the town’s streets to give the Queen the best of Lancashire welcome as she embarked on her Diamond Jubilee tour.
At the time, The Queen praising the people of Burnley for their "astounding warmth”.
The Queen, Prince Charles and the Duke of Edinburgh went on a canal boat barge for a half-mile tour through the heart of the Weavers’ Triangle to Slaters Terrace and Victoria Mill.
Highlights of the day also included a visit to Burnley FC, for a performing arts show and lunch, and a tour around the Burnley College and UCLan campus, before she headed to Accrington for a tour of the market and reception.
In 1955 the Queen and Prince Philip paid their first visit to Blackburn during a tour of East Lancashire.
While on the tour, they stopped off in Burnley where they had lunch at the town hall.
The clamour of “We want the Queen” brought her to the town hall’s balcony to acknowledge their cries.
The Queen also visited Burnley back in 1987 when she sampled ale prepared by Burnley-based Moorhouse’s Brewery and visited the Mechanics Centre complex, now known as the Mechanics Theatre.
On Thursday (September 8) members of the royal family hurried to Balmoral where the Queen was undergoing medical supervision.
Buckingham Palace issued a statement at 12.32pm on Thursday, saying doctors were concerned for the Queen’s health.
