One of the world's craziest culinary competitions is back with a bang this bank holiday Monday.
The World Gravy Wrestling Championships returns to The Rose ‘n’ Bowl in Stacksteads on Monday, August 29, and will see contestants battle it out in a pool full of Lancashire gravy.
People come from across the UK to take part in the whacky event, which is usually conducted in fancy dress.
Contestants must wrestle in the gravy for two minutes while being scored on audience applause, and various different moves – and what’s more, the gravy is vegan, so all can participate.
A spokesperson for the competition, which is now in its eleventh year, said: “Gravy wrestling is based on having fun...although there is serious competitive streak among most competitors.”
The Gravy Wrestling Championships take annually at the Rose n Bowl Pub in Newchurch Road, Stacksteads, but have been absent from the event calendar for the last two years due to the Covid pandemic.
Both male and female competitors battle it out to be crowned World Gravy Wrestling Champion, with the event raising much needed funds for the East Lancs Hospice.
Food is available on the day along with an outside bar, with the wrestling commencing at 1pm.
Showers are provided for the participants along with local fire crews, who are on hand to hose competitors down after their stint in the gravy.
The event is organised by Jon Lowe of the Rose n Bowl pub and Andy Holt of Real Lancashire Black Puddings.
