A landmark Victorian building in a town centre will go under the hammer next month.

Gothic House in St James Street, Accrington, will be auctioned by Pugh's in their online sale on September 20 and 21.

The building - currently offices - has a guide price of £138,000.

Originally the home of flamboyant local character and solicitor Charles ‘Torney’ Hall, it has also been Lancashire County Council’s education offices and a tourist information centre.

In 2010, the 19th century heritage building was considered to be one of the district’s most iconic landmarks in a vote by residents.

Hyndburn Council leader Cllr Miles Parkinson said: "I believe it is currently a solicitors' officer with the firm moving elsewhere.

"It is an important, lovely and historic building in the conservation area.

"I hope whoever buys it invests in Gothic House to boost the town centre and hopefully bring jobs."

Cllr Peter Britcliffe, the current chairman of Lancashire County Council and deputy leader of Hyndburn's Conservative group, said: "Gothic House is an important and characterful building in the centre of Accrington.

"I hope it will be bought and invested in to enhance the heritage of the town."

Pugh managing director Paul Thompson said: “Due to its historic past, Gothic House is a very well-known iconic building in the district and we’re expecting a great deal of interest in it.

“It’s well placed for Accrington’s amenities and offers exciting opportunities for potential future development, subject to any buyer gaining the necessary planning consents”

The 2,300 square foot detached period office building would be suitable for continuing office use, alternative uses or redevelopment.

Gothic House is located at the junction of St James Street and Cannon Street, opposite St James’ Church and a short distance from Accrington Town Hall and town centre.

Accrington train station is nearby, and the M65 motorway is within easy reach.

There is parking to the side and rear of the property for approximately eight vehicles, together with a grassed area.

The sale of the building sees Forbes Solicitors relocate its team from Gothic House to its other local offices in Blackburn.

It will also continue to support the Accrington community by offering appointments at The Globe Centre, St James Square, Accrington.
