Former Blackburn Rovers player, Ella Toone, appeared on Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast recently, and told presenters that David Beckham "slid into her DMs".
Ella, who joined Rovers from Manchester United as a teenager, spoke to hosts Mo Gilligan and Blackburn’s AJ Odudu fresh from the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 victory, and said some famous faces have messaged her since the win.
The 22-year-old said footballing legend, David Beckham, is just one celebrity who has “slid into her DMs”.
Mo asked Ella and teammate Alessia Russo if they partied after the victory.
Ella said: “To be fair we had a big party, yeah. We celebrated. I think some of us are still celebrating."
AJ asked: "Love that! Has anyone exciting slid into your DM's since the big win?"
To which Ella replied: “There's been a few...David Beckham.”
"Woah, casual. David Beckham… say no more,” said AJ after the impressive name drop.
Before the final, David congratulated the Lionesses for their achievements and for inspiring his daughter, Harper.
The former England men’s captain said the Lionesses’ performances had been “so uplifting” as he wished them luck in the remainder of the tournament.
In a video message released before the semi-final, Beckham said: “Hey, Lionesses, it’s David here.
“I just wanted to send you a message, firstly to say congratulations on an incredible tournament so far, it’s been so uplifting, it’s been so exciting, and it’s been so inspiring.
“And for me personally, you know I have a daughter, so for her to be inspired by you girls and your performances has been incredible.”
Ella scored one of two England goals in the UEFA Euro 2022 final at the end of July.
England beat Germany 2-1 after extra time in front of 87,000 supporters at Wembley Stadium on Sunday July 31, securing the first major tournament title for the country since 1966.
Three of the players, including Ella, were reared in East Lancashire and spent the beginning of their careers at Blackburn Rovers; these include Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway.
Ella, who plays as a forward, made an immediate impact when she joined Rovers.
She made 20 appearances with the club and scored 13 goals, with her helping to take the team to the final in the 2016-17 season of the FA Women's Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Rovers 3-0.
At the age of 16 she played a significant part in Blackburn winning the third tier, as well as scoring an incredible six goals as Rovers beat Rotherham United 19-0.
Ella then joined Manchester City - who have pumped a large amount of resources into their women's set up, poaching top players from across the country - in the summer of 2016, but continued to play with Blackburn in the National League on dual registration terms.
In 2018, when United finally created a senior women's team again, she rejoined her childhood club, and made her senior international debut last year.
You can watch The Big Breakfast on Saturdays at 10am on Channel 4 and All 4. The episodes will broadcast live for two-and-a-half hours for three more weeks.
