An impressive 72-year-old woman from Blackburn is proving that age is just a number by taking part in a self-defence course.
Blackburn self defence organisation, Z’s Defence Academy is running a six-week course for Blackburn Carers service and the carers they support.
One of them is fully retired 72-year-old Aish, who has branched out of her comfort zone by participating in the self-defence course.
Aish refuses to let her age limit her hobbies and instead has built her confidence through learning self-defence techniques and improved strength and resilience for her body and mind through simple exercises.
She said: “I joined the self-defence course because I think it’s better to know some tricks and moves to protect and defend myself.
“This is completely different for me. It’s really nice meeting people and the tutor is really good, excellent - she knows what she’s doing.”
Aish believes that despite what others may think, people in her generation are able to push boundaries and learn self defence techniques. She added: “I think (older) people should have a basic idea about it and what to do to defend themselves rather than being in that situation and doing nothing.”
Self defence instructor Zee Jogi is running another six-week course for Blackburn Carers service starting next week on Monday, August 1.
Blackburn with Darwen Carers service provide support for family members caring for someone where there is an illness or disability.
The charity provides activities such as trips out, coffee mornings and support groups to give carers ‘a life of their own and development opportunities.’
The latest addition to the activities provided is the academy’s six-week course that Zee provides in an aim to empower and help the people who dedicate their life to helping others.
Zee has developed 17 years of martial arts experience so is motivated to use her expertise to go out and offer people, particularly those who are more vulnerable, self-defence sessions.
Each person receives a certificate and personal safety alarm after finishing the course to mark the milestone achievement.
The one-hour lessons will start at 2pm every Monday and will run every week until Monday, September 12.
If you’re eligible to join the carers course, you can book online.
