Lancashire Constabulary has referred itself to the police watchdog after a Lancashire mum tragically died on the railway in Garstang last week.
Kiena Dawes, from Fleetwood, died in an incident on Friday, July 22.
Now, the police force is being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over its handling of the case and the contact they had with the 23-year-old shortly before her death.
By law, police forces must report themselves to the IOPC if they have had recent contact with anyone who later dies or becomes seriously injured.
On July 11, days before her death, a 28-year-old man from Fleetwood was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Kiena and causing actual bodily harm.
He had since been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries.
A spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with Kiena’s loved ones at this difficult time.
“We have referred ourselves to the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct) in relation to contact we had with Kiena before her death.
“Therefore it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this time.”
Kiena Dawes leaves behind her nine-month-year-old daughter, Marnie, who is reportedly being cared for by her uncle, Kynan Dawes.
A GoFundMe has been set up by friend Matthew Sanderson to raise money for the care of the child.
According to the fundraiser, Kynan has had to give up his job as a builder to take care of Marnie.
Matthew said: “We are asking people not to let Kynan struggle alone.
“Please support Kynan so he can get a deposit to rent a house, buy some essentials for Marnie and pay towards his sister's funeral.
“Any excess funds will be placed in trust for Marnie once she turns 18.
“Thanks again and thanks for your support.”
Commenting on the GoFundMe, Kynan said: “This is absolutely amazing.
“My family and little Marnie appreciate this so much. My gorgeous niece who now has no mum to grow up with will 100 per cent appreciate what your all doing.
“I still can’t believe you’re gone Kiena.
“But I will make sure I look after Marnie and she will grow up to be the most perfect little girl just as you would have wanted.”
£13,500 has been raised so far smashing the £2,500 target.
