THE total renovation of a popular but dilapidated children's playground has moved a step nearer with its latest cash injection.

The £100,000 contract has been awarded for new equipment for the refurbishment of Blacksnape Play Area in Darwen.

The cash comes as a developer's contribution from an agreement with McDermott Homes who are building a housing estate on nearby Ellison Fold Way.

Blackburn with Darwen Council's Director of Environment and Operations, Martin Eden, has awarded the contract to Kompan Ltd.

The news has been welcomed by the authority's leader Cllr Phil Riley, Darwen East Liberal Democrat Cllr Paul Browne and Darwen West ward Labour councillor Cllr Dave Smith.

In 2019, management of the adjacent playing field was transferred to Blackburn Eagles junior football club but the play area remained in council hands.

In a report Mr Eden said: "Blacksnape Playing fields is a very popular location in Darwen.

"The grounds are home to a large number of grass football pitches to suit all ages although it is mainly junior football that is played, with a modern changing facility which is currently under the stewardship of a local football junior club.

"The council have appointed a play equipment supplier to develop a children’s outdoor play area at Blacksnape Playing Fields."

Mr Eden said the main project aims are to:

  • Provide an imaginative, physically challenging and coordinated play experience for children of all ages and abilities;
  • Create a unique and visually inspiring play space, which acts as a destination for residents of the borough, which families will want to visit repeatedly;
  • Ensure a robust and sustainable play space that is cost-effective to maintain and suitable for a green space in a rather exposed (in weather terms) location;
  • Ensure that any play equipment currently on site that is in good useable condition remains on site (although it can be moved if needed);
  • Provide an area that promotes a safe and fun atmosphere encouraging people to stay and enjoy the area;
  • Provide a play area that encourages active play and promotes movement and physical activity.

He added: "Due to the age and condition of the current play area, this refurbishment is much needed to ensure the play space’s sustainability for future years."

Cllr Browne said: "I think this is excellent news. It's long overdue."

Cllr Riley said: "This will give Darwen a play area to the same standard as the new one in Corporation Park in Blackburn. It is good news for people in the town."

Cllr Smith added: "This is excellent news and much needed."
