A NEW mural of Liam Gallagher marking his historic Blackburn gig and link with Darwen Adidas Spezial designer Gary Aspden has been unveiled in the town centre.
The huge painting is located on the side of the Nightsafe building at The Boulevard Centre in Railway Road, and has been completed by Global Street Art's Pete Barber.
It follows his special concert at King George’s Hall in April in aid of the charity, to mark the release of his new album and link up with Gary Aspden on new Adidas Spezial trainers.
The completion of the artwork, which has been created this week, comes on the eve of huge gigs the former Oasis frontman is holding at Knebworth and the Etihad Stadium.
It depicts Liam Gallagher wearing a signature parka and holding a pair of Adidas LG2SPZL trainers, adorned with the imaging from posters used to promote the King George’s Hall concert in April, and his link up with Adidas Spezial.
The trainers are his second collaboration with Gary Aspden.
It also features a logo below featuring the Adidas logo, which was just being completed when the Lancashire Telegraph spotted the artwork this lunchtime, along with the Nightsafe logo.
Tonight Liam, who has just released his third solo album C’mon You Know, is playing a huge gig at the home of his beloved Manchester City, before embarking on two huge all-day shows at Knebworth in Hertfordshire.
The venue is synonymous with Gallagher and Oasis, after the band performed there to hundreds of thousands of fans in the 1990s.
Following the completion of the mural, Gary Aspden said: "Adidas Spezial announced the forthcoming trainer collaboration with Liam Gallagher by asking him to perform in Blackburn for the first time in his career whilst supporting Nightsafe.
“This was a massive moment for the charity and for the town.
“We wanted to find a way to create something that had more permanence to commemorate the occasion and further raise the profile of the charity.
“Having Pete Barber from Global Street Art create this incredible mural of Liam on the side of the Nightsafe office seemed a really good way to do this.
“Hopefully the people that come to see it will continue to donate and support the great work that Nightsafe are doing for young people in this area.”
One passing Oasis fan, who spotted the mural, said: “It looks great, I love it.
“The show he did was huge for Blackburn and put the town on the map, and it was great he did it to support Nightsafe.
“This mural is going to bring loads of people to the town wanting to see it and share it on social media. The town needs more things like this.”
Jan Larkin, chief executive of Nightsafe, said: “The Liam Gallagher mural is absolutely amazing – a gift to us and we’re so proud to have it on the side of our building.
“The gig was just incredible and it really helped us not only raise vital funds but awareness too about the important work we do to support young, homeless people.
“Once again Gary has worked wonders in doing something to bring the community together, get people talking and shine a positive spotlight on Nightsafe and Blackburn with Darwen.
“We are incredibly blessed to have his support.”
It's not the first time a mural has been put up in Blackburn with Darwen to promote Adidas Spezial trainers; last year a painting of England footballer Luke Shaw was put up on a building in Darwen to promote a new campaign.
From Darwen, designer Gary Aspden is the genius behind the Adidas Spezial trainers, one of the sports brand's most iconic trainer ranges, working with Adidas since the 1990s.
Last year, a special Ewood edition of the trainers were released following his father's tragic death. Mr Aspden runs Darwen Design as well as working with Adidas.
Blackburn with Darwen Council leader, Councillor Phil Riley, added: "The Liam Gallagher concert will go down in history.
“Blackburn became a really talking point thanks to Liam and Gary and this is a great way to mark the impact it had and their support for Nightsafe.
“It’s also a brilliant addition to the other high quality murals we already have in the borough and it’s sure to attract a lot of attention.
“I’m all for us embracing all creative arts as it really brings the place to life.”
