Crowds brought a Blackburn street to a standstill as they welcomed a team of cyclists who were taking part in a charity bike ride.

Smokes flares were let off and banners and balloons adorned Davenport Road as the team of 40 cyclists returned from their sponsored ride.

The cyclists were raising funds for the newly built Islamic Education Centre.

‘Team Buraq’ were made up of fundraisers and helpers who had set off in the early hours of the morning on Sunday (May 29) to Blackpool. They returned to Blackburn in the afternoon and were welcomed by family and friends and garlands of flowers as they made their way along Davenport Road towards the centre.

Their efforts have been praised by the local community for helping to raise a staggering £70,000 for the cause. This year’s bike ride follows a similar challenge last August when the riders also raised thousands.

A spokesperson for the Islamic Education Centre said: “A huge thank you to all the riders who took part in the challenge and helping the centre meet its target.

“We would also like to thank all the companies and local businesses who supported in this venture and the volunteers who worked behind the scenes to help plan this event.

“This has been a community led project with people of all ages helping in which ever way they can.”

The new build is set to replace the Islamic Education Centre based on the corner of Addison Street as the main focal point for prayers and religious activities. The project is now in the final stages with money having been raised by donors and through fundraising events such as this cycle ride.

The exterior of the mosque has been completed and work is not taking place to complete the interior.

The new Islamic Education Centre will host events which will aim to address issues such as mental health, drug abuse and crime.
