A BLACKBURN pensioner has been fined more than £400 after admitting to speeding while in Cornwall during last year’s summer holidays.

Robert Eaves, 75, was caught driving his Mini Cooper over the speed limit while in the popular UK tourist destination on August 2, 2021.

Eaves, of Shadsworth Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to driving in excess of 60 miles per hour on the A30 near the hamlet of Roseworthy, close to the St Ives Bay and just outside the town of Camborne.

The single carriageway road has the national speed limit, which Eaves was in excess of when caught by a speed camera.

In a single justice procedure at Bodmin Magistrates’ Court on April 25, which he did not attend, Eaves was handed a fine of £306 and five points on his driving record. He was also ordered to pay court costs of £90 and a surcharge to fund victim services of £34, for a total amount of £430.

He was given until May 23 to pay the fine.

Single Justice Procedures are used on certain offences in magistrates’ court to allow cases to be dealt with by a single magistrate on the basis of papers alone with neither party needing to attend a hearing at court, meaning cases can be dealt with more quickly. They are commonly used for motoring and speeding offences.
