AN EXHIBITION of drawings by children affected by the genocide in Darfur has gone on display at Blackburn Cathedral, the first UK venue outside London.

The Witnesses to Genocide exhibition is a collection of drawings showing attacks on villages, the displacement of individuals and families, massacres, shootings, and the burning of homes - among the many atrocities seen in western Sudan during its ethnic conflict which began almost five years ago.

Cathedral Canon Chris Chivers and Anjum Anwar have worked with Blackburn College and Blackburn Museum to stage the display.

They said: "Nothing like enough is being done to stop this genocide. We know the facts, these drawings prove them.

"Our hope is that by offering them to all communities in Blackburn and Lancashire we will motivate people to come together to challenge the appalling inhumanity and evil suffered by the people of Darfur.

"No child should ever have to experience what these children have been through."

The exhibition runs until February 10.
