A young bank worker drank himself to death as he copied a scene from the hit film American Pie 5: The Naked Mile, an inquest heard.

David Reid, 22, took part in a drinking game which mirrored a scene in the movie in which two men have a contest to find the "last man standing".

The Manchester University graduate and a friend downed half-bottles of tequila, together with whisky, in a 45-minute binge-drinking session. Earlier they had drunk margarita cocktails and cans of beer.

His friend, James Lynch, told the inquest in Manchester that Mr Reid would normally have seven or eight pints of beer a night at weekends and it was "out of character" for him to drink to excess.

The Bank of New York worker was carried to bed at his home in Levenshulme after saying he could not drink any more. Hours later he was found dead, Manchester Deputy Coroner Leonard Gorodkin was told.

Recording a verdict of misadventure, Mr Gorodkin said Mr Reid died from alcohol poisoning which had stopped his brain from working.

A blood alcohol sample showed he was six to seven times over the legal drinking limit.

Following the hearing, his father, Philip Reid, a former publican, pleaded for young people to learn from the tragedy.

He said his son's death showed that binge-drinking can kill.
