If you are on the hunt for a quirky property in Lancashire then look no further than this unusual Preston property.
Pilling Windmill is located on Taylors Lane, Preston, and is “steeped in history”, dating back to 1808 - and it's on the market.
Also known as The Old Mill and Damside Mill, the renovated build was constructed by Fylde millwright, Ralph Slater, who also built Marsh Mill in Thornton-Cleveleys which is regarded as one of the largest in Europe.
The mill was converted to steam power in 1886 and the sails were removed the year after.
It continued to operate until 1926, after which it fell into disrepair. By 1975, however, the mill had been painstakingly renovated for residential use and is still a private residence today.
On 2nd February 2007, the mill was fitted with a traditional Lancashire boat top cap by the current owners.
The cap was designed to match Marsh Mill at Thornton Cleveleys and was built by Neil Medcalfe - a traditional millwright from Lincolnshire.
Today, Pilling Windmill remains an important feature on the local landscape and stands at over 73 feet tall. From the top, owners can enjoy unique views towards the Lake District and the Pennines.
The windmill itself has been built on a reed bed and has a lower course of sandstone surmounted by bricks.
The property comprises of a ground floor reception room with open plan living space, kitchen diner and front and rear porches.
On the first floor there are two large double bedrooms and family bathroom. The second floor is used as a further sitting room with a wrap-around balcony.
The third floor has the master bedroom with en-suite shower room.
The fourth floor can beaccessed via a fixed ladder and at present is being used as a hobby room and library.
The fifth floor is currently used as a loft for storage but has beautiful panoramic views from the fantail balcony.
Outside, the property has south facing garden to the rear with patio. There is also a pond with a mill wheel fountain.
A spokesperson for Farrell Heyworth Sale & Lettings said: “In all my years as an estate agent never have I been in a property steeped in such history and with the ability to really make me say ‘wow’.
“Not only is the property a unique, it offers amazing living accommodation and panoramic views that can only be appreciated upon inspection.”
