A Bacup bakery owner has thanked the local community for donating a huge amount of goods towards the Ukraine relief effort.
The gesture was described as ‘amazing’ by Danielle Almond of Baked Cakes who acted as a local collection point for items being sent to the Polish border for Ukrainian refugees.
Danielle, who runs her bakery from St James Street, said the community wanted to do all it could to help those in need during the conflict.
Danielle said: “Our amazing community dropped off donations bringing enough items to fill three vans.
"These were then transported to the main Polish community centre in our area and loaded onto a lorry ready to be driven to the Polish border with items for refugees.
“We are also delivering another five boxes of essential items this week such as medical equipment, sanitary items and baby items which will be driven over soon.”
Danielle, 30, set up her business in June 2020 at the height of the Covid pandemic after quitting her ‘stressful’ job as a GP practice manager in Oswaldtwistle. She had been baking for friends and family for many years, who all suggested she bake full time.
She is celebrating the two-year anniversary of her bakery in June and hoping to host a celebration and help raise more funds for the people of Ukraine.
She added: “We spoke with so many small businesses, some local, some further afield to ask if they would donate items for very special goody bags which will be raffled off with funds going to the Ukrainian Emergency Fund.
“We thought it would help promote some small businesses after a rubbish two years, give some lucky people a lovely selection of treats and raise money for people of Ukraine.
“Our community has been amazing and I’d love to make this event a massive thing, not only for the people of the Ukraine but also as a thank you to all those in my local community who have supported our business and overwhelmed us with their generosity with donations.”
The Baked Cakes second anniversary event takes place on 4 June.
