A SUSPECTED outbreak of the bluetongue virus could have major implications for farmers in Lancashire.
Infected sheep have been discovered on farms in Greater Manchester and Shropshire which means that animal movement restrictions could be imposed if test results prove positive.
If the animals are infected movement restrictions could be extended, possibly affecting Lancashire.
The results of the tests are expected later today.
However, any extension of the protection zone would have bigger implications for Wales and further towards the south west of England.
Bluetongue is a disease spread by midges and causes the tongue and lips of the infected animal to swell, often making them appear blue.
It can not be contracted by pigs, horses or humans.
