A NINE-YEAR-OLD East Lancashire boy will help lead out England's footballing stars for Fabio Capello's first match in charge.
Lewis Garratty, of Grizedale Close, Clayton-le-Moors, won a competition to be a mascot for the friendly match against Switz-erland on February 6.
Italian Capello, who scouted the Blackburn Rovers versus Aston Villa match on Saturday, takes over from Steve McClaren after England failed to qualify for the European Championships.
Lewis' mum, Donna, 36, said: "He didn't believe it at first.
"He only believed it fully when we handed a letter to his head-teacher to ask for a day off school.
"Then his first words were It's better than Christmas'. He hasn't slept since he found out!
"He's been telling all of his friends and teachers at All Saint's Primary School and making them jealous, but they're all really pleased for him."
He won the prize in a competition run by the England Junior Members' Fan Club, which he has been a member of since he was three.
Blackburn Rovers fan Lewis has had a season ticket at Ewood Park since he was a toddler, and has also been a mascot for the club. But even though he is familiar with what he has to do as a mascot, he still admits to being nervous.
Lewis said: "My favourite player is David Bentley and, even though he plays for Rovers, I haven't met him, but I will at Wembley. The score will be 2-1 to England, and David Bentley and Steven Gerrard will score a goal each.
"I think Fabio Capello will make a good England manager."
Lewis' dad, Peter, 45, has been a member of the England Fan Club for more than 20 years.
He said: "When I saw they had a junior section, I signed Lewis up.
"For every match they hold a competition on their website for mascots to walk out with the players, stand on the pitch, and sing the national anthem.
"Lewis has entered about 10 times and not won, but this time he's hit the jackpot.
"It's extra special for him because this is the first match Fabio Capello will be manager."
Peter will travel to Wembley with Lewis and they will sit in special seats at the new stadium to watch the game after Lewis has done his duties.
He will also be given a commemorative England strip to keep as a memento of the day.
