The family of a Longridge teenager, who died 10 years ago, is raising money and holding an event in memory of her.

Georgina Collinson died, aged 19, after being involved in a car accident back in 2012. Now, her family are hoping to raise money for a wellness centre in the school she used to attend.

The event will take place on 28 May and will consist of a one mile swim, 21 mile cycle and seven mile run, followed by an evening of ceilidh dancing.

The money raised will go towards a wellness area within Georgina’s secondary school, Longridge High School.

Sister, Katie Collinson, has set up a GoFundMe page so that people can still donate and support the cause even if they aren’t taking part; she is hoping to raise £2000.

Katie said: “Everyone in the Longridge community was affected by Georgina’s loss and we felt that it was right to bring the community and school back together to mark her 10 year anniversary.

“George was very sporty and sociable, so it seemed like an event she would have partaken in.”

Longridge High School has continued to support the family after Georgina’s accident; the school even created the ‘Georgina Collinson’ award, which is given out  in their yearly awards acknowledge a pupil’s contribution to sport.

At the time of George’s death, Longridge High School’s head teacher, Jane Green, said: “Georgina was an absolutely delightful young lady with a lovely, supportive family.

“She was extremely conscientious, contributing fully to school life and loving her sport, particularly netball.

“Very popular with her peers, Georgina also had a great relationship with staff at Longridge High School.

After talking with the school, it was agreed that a wellness centre would be the most appropriate thing to create with the money raised.

Katie said: “As a family we have always stayed close with the school, both before and after the accident.

“We are living in an era where mental health affects us all. We think it’s nice to create a space that everyone can access in the school, whether it be for a grievance or another aspect of mental health.”
