Sam Aston and his wife, Briony, appeared on ITV’s Loose Women yesterday (15 February) - and Sam opened up about his future on Coronation Street.
The pair, who live in Rossendale, appeared on the panel show’s ‘love week’ and talked all about their journey from childhood sweethearts to married couple.
Panelists also asked Sam about “stealing the nation’s hearts” while playing Chesney Brown in Coronation Street – a role which he has been playing since 2003.
Sam has been given plenty of exciting storylines over the years, including adventures with his dog, Schmeichel, and facing the challenge of raising quadruplets.
Reflecting on the last 19 years on the soap, Sam said: “It’s flown to be honest and I can’t believe it. I’m very lucky and I thoroughly enjoy it at Corrie.”
Asking about his future on the show and other acting plans, Janet Street-Porter said: “Is there any chance you could suddenly branch out and be somebody else or is that character and you so closely intertwined now?”
Sam said: “I’ve not entertained the idea right now, maybe not.
“I’ve played him for so long, but I have been lucky because I’ve had so many storylines over the years. They always test you and give you something to get your teeth into.”
The Loose Women panel showed Sam a clip of his very first appearance on the show, when he booby trapped a door to drop water on Fiz’s head.
Sam said he remembers the day “like it was yesterday” and said he wasn’t nervous.
He said: “When you’re that young you’re fearless and I didn’t really understand the magnitude of the show.
“I was just going there and having a good time. Acting was something I enjoyed and it was like a hobby”.
Sam and Briony also opened up about their relationship, saying they met as teenagers at a drama workshop.
Sam proposed to Briony in 2017 and the pair got married in Cheshire two years later.
They welcomed their first child, Sonny, in August 2020.
Briony is now pregnant with their second child and first daughter, who is expected this spring.
Briony, a yoga teacher who co-owns Happy Baby Studio in Crawshawbooth, said the second pregnancy was a “wonderful” surprise.
Speaking on Loose Women, she said: “We knew we wanted more anyway but didn’t plan on having such a close age gap… but it’s just a blessing that it has happened so smoothly.”
