LANDOWNERS have the chance to get their hands on £120,000 for environmental work as part of a new scheme.

The Forestry Commission's Woodland Improvement Grant (WIG) aims to increase public benefits from existing woodlands.

Cash from the scheme has already been put to good use at the Thorn Bank Community Woodland in Bacup. The project received £15,000 from WIG to transform an area of woodland opposite the Bacup Primary Care Trust centre into a "health wood". It was part of an NHS-supported project to get local people out and taking regular exercise in green spaces.

Penny Oliver, of the Forestry Commission, added: "Woodland Improvement Grants are intended for people who want to increase the public benefits of existing woodlands.

"Whether it is actively protecting our region's native woodland habitats or developing projects where there is a real need for improved public access."
